Is
there an orientation I can attend?
If you
are a new NWCCD online learner or new to the Blackboard CE course
management environment, it is expected that you complete one of the orientation to
online
learning
options.
The orientation can be completed
now
from the Sheridan College Distance Education Website: (www.sheridan.edu/distance/orientation.asp)
or you can attend one of the following on-site sessions:
When
can I start my class?
Default
access to the course on Blackboard typically occurs one week before the
first day of class. Many instructors will set the access date for
Blackboard to the first day of classes. If you do not see your class
listed on your Course List in Blackboard by the second day of class
(September 1), please contact the Help Desk (see back page for contact
information).
Can I
find out more about my class before the first day of class?
We are
in the process of creating an Online Course Overviews page (www.sheridan.edu/distance/courseoverviews.asp)
on the NWCCD Website that provides textbook and software
requirements, basic online format,
feedback,
frequency of Blackboard access,
technical skill
requirements, as well as a
brief bio of the
instructor for online courses. Other pertinent information that can be
found on the course overview page could include
additional course
fees or charges,
online learning environments outside
Blackboard, and
any additional instructions the
instructor may want you to know before you begin the course. Your
instructor may send specific instructions to your Sheridan College
e-mail (username@sheridan.edu)
so be sure to check your e-mail by logging into e-services
from
any Sheridan College Web page.
How do
I get my textbooks for the course?
You can access either the Sheridan College (www.sheridanbookstore.com)
or Gillette College (www.gillettebookstore.com)
online bookstores to purchase your textbooks and other required
materials.
How do
I access my course(s) on Blackboard?
To
access your online course(s) on Blackboard, follow the steps below:
1.
Access the NWCCD home page at
www.sheridan.edu.
2. Click the Online Learning link.
3. Click the Log into My Web Courses link.

What if
I run into trouble?
Course
difficulty questions with Blackboard should be directed to
your instructor.
There may be course settings that the instructor has to adjust in order
to work properly. Technical difficulty questions with Blackboard
access should be directed to our Help Desk.

Technical Support Hours
during
the regular semester
(Mountain Time)
Monday
through Thursday 8:00 am – 9:00 pm
Friday 8:00 am –
5:00 pm
Many of
the problems encountered by online students are a direct result of not
completing the Orientation to Online Learning or not having the
necessary Web browser “updates” and “plug-ins” installed on your
computer.
Additional information regarding technical support resources for online
students can be found at (http://www.sheridan.edu/distance/orientation/techsupportresources.asp).
Course sites in Blackboard will not be visible until the
first day of the course. Some instructors, however, open
their courses up before the first day in order for students
to browse around. If your course is not showing up after the
first day, please contact your instructor as they may have
set the course availability to Not Available.
I can't open Word 2007 or PowerPoint 2007 files. What can I do?
If you
cannot open Word 2007, Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007 files that your
instructor has posted on Blackboard, it is probably because you do not
have the programs installed on your computer system. Word and PowerPoint
are very common software programs that many college students purchase.
If you have the 2003 version of PowerPoint, Excel, and/or Word, you can
download an add-in converter
here to open 2007 files and it is FREE.
If you do not have any of
these programs and need a
quick
cost-effective (cheap!) solution to open files posted by your
instructor, you can access the PowerPoint or Word 2007 Viewer download
links
here.
