Stoney Gaddy
Director of Distance & Distributive Learning
NWCCD
sgaddy@sheridan.edu
My name is Stoney Gaddy and I am the Director of Distance
Learning at Sheridan College.
I have been teaching online since 1999. For twelve years, I was
a faculty member at Independence Community College (KS) where I
taught information technology courses such Web design,
networking and data communications, and general computer
literacy courses in F2F (67%) and online formats (33%). I have
also taught online and hybrid courses for Pittsburg State
University and Friends University.
Best Design Practice: Start with solid measurable outcomes and
align them with good assessments and quality learning
activities. |
Getting Started
The 1 credit hour course will be available on Blackboard
(http://webct6.sheridan.edu/) beginning
February 2.
Textbook and Software Requirements
-
There is no textbook required for this course.
-
Access to Microsoft Office 2007 and the World Wide Web are
required. Please refer to NWCCDs
minimum technical requirements for online courses
Web page for additional information.
-
This course will
include a variety of document, video, and audio media
formats. Please refer to our
plug-in download page for more information.
Basic Online Format
Schedule: This course is organized in modules and will
follow a weekly schedule.
Homework: All weekly
coursework is expected by Tuesday morning at 8:00am unless
otherwise posted on Blackboard. In order to pass the course,
each assignment/project must receive completion approval by the
instructor. For example if a syllabus is posted on a Blackboard
course with 90% of the required components, feedback will be
provided by the instructor in order to assist the participant to
fully complete the task.
While there is not a “late submission” penalty for assignments,
please make every attempt to stay with the schedule in order to
complete the course requirements.
Discussion: The discussion board will be used to
introduce one another to peers, answer course-related questions
(Q&A), and discuss a variety of topics relating to online
learning and teaching.
Quizzes and Exams: There will be NO exams in this
course. Assessments in this course are project-based.
Feedback
For emergencies and quick responses, I can be reached by phone
at extension 2510. In addition, I will maintain at least one (1)
online office hours per week in the Chat Room. Days and times
will be announced at the beginning of each week.
Responses to e-mail, discussion board posts, and voice mail will
be returned within 24 hours (longer on weekends and holidays).
Most assignments will be submitted through Blackboard's Mail
feature. One assignment will be submitted through Turnitin.com.
Assignment grading and related feedback will be completed within
reason (typically seven (7) days). It is my intent to begin grading assignments as they are
submitted. Some assignments can be graded in one evening while
others take more time.
Frequency of Blackboard Access
Since there is not a textbook associated
with this class, you will need to access Blackboard to open
module readings, videos, PowerPoint presentations, and
assignments. Most of these files can be downloaded and printed
for offline viewing. There are two required discussion board
activities that you will need to access Blackboard to
participate in. Most of the assignments/projects in the course
will be completed outside the Blackboard environment.
Computer Skills Required
All students who are new to using
Blackboard or are taking their first online class from NWCCD,
are expected to complete the Orientation to Online Learning
prior to beginning this class. Students need to meet the
minimum computer literacy expectations as well as the
minimum technology requirements. Go to the Distance Learning
website for more information (www.sheridan.edu/distance/).
