English Composition II (ENGL 1020)

Keri Bjorklund
English Instructor
Sheridan College

kbjorklund@sheridan.edu

Just a note about me— I had the pleasure of moving to Sheridan from Cheyenne in August, 2007. Before moving to Sheridan, I lived in Cheyenne, Laramie, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Tucson, AZ. I’m originally from Flagstaff, Arizona but have lived several places throughout the years—places like Fagersta, Sweden, Grand Rapids, MN, and many other places. I earned a BA in English from the University of Arizona in Tucson and a Master’s degree in English from the University of Wyoming. Currently, I’m in the process of earning my Doctorate in Education at the University of Wyoming. I have taught composition, English to Speakers of Other Languages, developmental writing courses, Intro. to Poetry and Drama, as well as other literature courses—both in the classroom and online. I look forward to getting your perspective on literature.

Getting Started

You will be able to access the course in Blackboard on the first day of regular class for the present semester.

Textbook and Software Requirements

The following textbook can be purchased through the Sheridan College Bookstore:

  • Gwynn, R. Literature: A Pocket Anthology ISBN: 0205787045 (make sure to get this edition—it includes access to MyLiteratureLab, a required supplement to the course).

The following software/computer skills are required for the class:

  • Microsoft Word or ability to save documents as RTF files.

My Literature Lab from Pearson Higher Education—this is included with the textbook: ISBN 0205787045.

Basic Online Format

The work week for ENGL 1020 is Sunday at 11:55 p.m. through Sunday at 11:55 p.m.

Assignments include textbook reading assignments, written assignments, discussions, group peer review, and 3 major papers.

Because this is a discussion course, assignments follow a set schedule and due-dates are not flexible.

Feedback

Students are expected to read all e-mails, announcements, and discussion postings.

The instructor will respond to e-mail within 24 hours during the business week and a bit longer on the weekends and over holidays.  Discussion responses should be within 48 hours generally.

Assignments will be graded within one-two weeks.  Students can check grades and graded assignments online.

The instructor is available by phone Monday through Friday at: 307-674-6446, etc. 3011 OR 1-800-913-9139, ext. 3011 OR Skype: kerisb2. You may also use the “Who’s Online” feature when the instructor is online.

Frequency of Blackboard Access

The course requires twice weekly participation in discussions.  Part I of the discussion is always due no later than Wednesday by 11:55 p.m. and Part II is always due no later than Sunday by 11:55 p.m.  The discussions serve several important purposes, including building relationships between instructor and students as well as among students in the course, ensuring students check the course regularly, sharing ideas and building upon each others’ thoughts, creating an information and opinion base for assignments and papers.

While the twice weekly discussions are a requirement, students are encouraged to check e-mail and discussion postings as often as possible.  Announcements will also appear as needed to update and clarify information.

Computer Skills Required

All students who are new to using Blackboard or are taking their first online class from NWCCD are expected to complete the Orientation to Online Learning prior to beginning this class. Students need to meet the minimum computer literacy expectations as well as the minimum technology requirements. Go to the Distance Learning website for more information (www.sheridan.edu/distance/).
